Thuvara Payasam /Whole Toor Payasam

Toor or Thuvara in our place,as u all know, is a high source of protein .In India, split pigeon peas (toor dal) are one of the most popular pulses in a mostly vegetarian diet. In regions where it grows, fresh young pods are eaten as vegetable in dishes such as sambhar. We used to make dhal curry with it which compliments with rice or dosas really well. But whole Toor ,in my region, is used only for payasams as far as I know. It's not available in UAE, where I lives, so I have to bring it all the way from India. This is ma mom's recipe 'as usual' ;luvd by ma kids & they call it as 'Black Payasam'. Its healthier and so easy to prepare compared to other payasams.
Jaggery contains lots of irons, & I used to substitute raagi with white rice, thinking that the former is a good supplement of calcium , till I knew that Calcium and iron combined in a meal may decrease the absorption of iron.

 Ingredients:

Whole Toor /Thuvara 1 cup
White Rice/Pachari 1/2 cup (You can use Raagi also)
Jaggery 200 gms/ 2 blocks
Coconut 1/2- 3/4 cup
Cardamom 2pods
Salt

Method:

Cook whole toor/Thuvara in pressure cooker till soft. Make sure that there is a minimal of water alongwith the toor after cooking;otherwise try to reduce it by boiling.

Melt Jaggery in another pan with enough water.

Soak white rice in water for a minimum of an hr or overnight. Grind these with water in a blender.

Add Jaggery, then rice & coconut to the cooked Toor..Keep on stirring till it reaches the correct consistency of the payasam. Serve it hot or cold !!
